AMA President-Elect, NCMS President Address House of Delegates

This morning in Raleigh, Ardis Hoven, MD, President-Elect of the American Medical Association addressed the NCMS House of Delegates. In her remarks Dr. Hoven congratulated the NCMS on past successes, including the passage of SB 33 – Medical Liability Reforms in 2011 and the creation of the NCMS Opioid Death Reduction Task Force.

Dr. Hoven also noted that while imperfect, the Affordable Care Act is an important first step toward real changes in our healthcare system and assured the House of Delegates that the AMA will continue to advocate for policies that improve the system for both physicians and patients – including to advocate for repeal of the Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB).

Michael Moulton, MD, the newly inducted President of the NCMS also addressed the NCMS House of Delegates this morning, focusing his comments on the “interesting times” physicians and their patients now live in. Dr. Moulton highlighted a number of federal reforms to health care which will impact North Carolina physicians and how they practice medicine – many of which stem from the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Dr. Moulton echoed the comment of Dr. Hoven, urging the repeal of entities such as the Medicare IPAB.

Despite the many new regulations upon the medical community, Dr. Moulton encouraged NCMS members to remain active and confident that their NCMS will work tirelessly on their behalf to represent both physicians and patients during these “interesting times.”
