BCBS NC: Billing for H1N1 Immunizations

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC (BCBS NC) is seeking to provide physician practices information about billing for H1N1 vaccine administration. Genie Komives, MD, VP, Sr. Medical Director, Healthcare Quality for BCBS NC, says the insurer is asking practices to bill the H1N1 specific vaccine administration codes (either the CPT code or the HCPCS code). Read the  BCBS H1N1 Immunization Billing Instructions (PDF). Providers are not required to file the H1N1 vaccine codes along with the administration code, but if they are to do so, they should bill this with a $0 charge, as the government is providing the vaccine to providers at no cost. This is consistent with guidance from AMA/CPT and Medicare.
