Physicians contracting with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans, who use their Social Security number as their Tax ID number, should be aware that their personal information was likely on a laptop computer that was stolen from a BCBS Association employee’s car. Each affected physician should have received a letter from BCBS addressing the breach. It is our understanding that BCBS is making free identity theft protection available to affected physicians who request it. AMA lawyers working on this issue recommend that affected physicians sign up for the fraud protection program through Experian. Local BCBS provider representatives should be able to assist physicians with questions and concerns regarding the breach.
