Changes to CME Requirements Effective August 1

On Wednesday, August 1, 2012, new rules take effect regarding the Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB) licensees. The rules reduce the number of CME hours required from 150 every three years to 60. This change will bring NCMB standards more in line with other states by completely eliminating Category II, or physician-initiated, CME. The rules also give physicians credit for board certification activities. The final rules were approved by the Rules Review Commission earlier this month.

The final rule was not printed and available upon publication of this Bulletin. However the draft rule, which was approved, can be viewed here: https://www.compassionatecarenc.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/proposed-CME-rules.pdf.
