Conflicting Data Over Influenza Trends in North Carolina

State Influenza Surveillance Coordinator Terry McLean says that the latest information on influenza cases from sentinel sites and hospital emergency rooms differs.  Data from the Sentinel Provider Network (SPN) indicate that influenza activity declined slightly last week, while hospital emergency information indicates a continued increase in influenza activity during the same time period. McLean says information received during the next two weeks will determine which trend is correct. Tests done by the State Public Health Laboratory reveal that virtually all influenza activity in North Carolina is the Pandemic A (H1N1) virus, which has been confirmed in 85 counties.
