Donate Life North Carolina License Plate Supports Organ Donation

During its past session, the North Carolina Legislature authorized a Donate Life License Plate with proceeds benefiting organ, tissue and eye transplant recipients as well as donor families through the state’s five transplant centers and through Donate Life North Carolina.

North Carolina House Speaker Pro Tem Dale R. Folwell received a Donate Life Award from Carolina Donor Services this fall for his advocacy in the legislature to support organ, eye and tissue donation, particularly the passage of the Heart Prevails legislation that makes your designation as an organ and eye donor on your driver’s license legally binding.

As Rep. Folwell concludes his work at the General Assembly over the next month, Donate Life NC is asking the public to join in honoring his support for organ, eye and tissue donation by ordering a Donate Life specialty license plate.  Proceeds from the plate will support public education through Donate Life NC and support transplant recipients and donor families through our state’s five transplant centers.

Rep. Folwell has even pledged to pay for the first year of the plate fee ($20) for the next 25 applications that are received by Donate Life NC (just write “Dale Folwell” on the top of the application and send it in).  We only need 97 more applications to begin production of the plates and begin to see them on cars throughout the state.

License plate production will begin when 300 applications are received. For the first 300 applicants, the application fee will be held in trust by Donate Life North Carolina until production begins. A regular Donate Life License Plate has an annual $20 fee due in addition to the regular license fee. A portion of the fee for the specialty tag will be sent to Donate Life North Carolina to be shared with Carolinas Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, Vidant Health (formerly ECU/Pitt Memorial), UNC Health Care and Wake Forest Baptist Health.  A personalized Donate Life License Plate for a $50 annual fee with four (4) spaces for a personalized message also is available. Each year upon license plate registration renewal, a portion of the renewal fee also will be distributed to encourage donor registration and to support families.

The application is available for download here. All the information needed to complete the application (VIN # and insurance information) can be found on a vehicle’s registration card. For more information, email [email protected].
