Dr. Estes Honored for Health Care Achievements

The North Carolina Foundation for Advanced Health Programs presented the Jim Bernstein Community Health Career Achievement Award to E. Harvey Estes, Jr., MD, at its annual Jim Bernstein Dinner and Lecture on October 7, 2010 in Chapel Hill. More than 300 people were on hand for the presentation. The award honors the life’s work of Jim Bernstein, founder of the North Carolina Office of Rural Health, the first such office in the nation dedicated to advancing the health of rural communities. Bernstein’s son Eric, wife Susan and daughter Donna participated in the presentation.

Dr. Estes is nationally recognized for his work in primary care and medical education. He served as chair of Duke University’s Department of Community and Family Medicine. The NCMS Physicians Community Service Award is named in honor of Dr. Estes and is presented at the NCMS Annual Meeting.
