Future MDs Discuss Concerns in Visit to NCMS

Thirteen second-year students from the Brody School of Medicine at ECU visited the NCMS on Monday to learn more about the NCMS and its Foundation. The students used the opportunity to discuss concerns about student debt, resources to help them practice medicine, how health system reform will affect their practice, and learning to navigate coding and reimbursement systems.

Presentations were made by Shawn Scott, NCMS Associate Deputy EVP and Director of Member Services; Maggie Sauer, Associate Executive Director of the NCMS Foundation and Director of the Community Practitioner Program; Chip Baggett, NCMS Director of Legislative Relations; and Nancy Hemphill, Special Projects Coordinator for the NC Medical Board.  Following the presentations, the students toured the legislative building.

The students are participating in the Brody SOM “Leadership Fellowship,” which is supported by a grant from BB&T. They will be creating and leading service projects during their fourth year.

NCMS Past President Charles F. Willson, MD, Professor of Pediatrics at Brody, accompanied the students.
