Interested in a Program To Combat Elder Abuse?

More than 7.3 million older Americans (1 in 5 over the age of 65) already have been victimized by a financial swindle. Appallingly, family members and caregivers are the perpetrators in 55% of the cases.

The NC Secretary of State Securities Division wishes to determine the level of interest in a proposed new program to help combat elder abuse, including financial victimization. Under this initiative, collaborators would refer cases to each other, whether it is to report fraud to securities regulators, report abuse to Adult Protective Services (APS) workers, or refer a patient to a clinician for further medical/cognitive evaluation.

They hope to join forces with the Elder Investment Fraud and Financial Exploitation program in utilizing two new resources created by the Baylor College of Medicine’s Texas Consortium Geriatric Education Center. The Clinicians’ Pocket Guide provides warning signs of investment fraud, tips for discussing financial capacity with senior patients and resources for reporting suspected abuse. The Patient Brochure is an investor education resource for seniors and their families to protect against financial fraud and exploitation.
