The North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) Leadership College was established in 2002 with the goal of identifying individuals with leadership potential and helping them hone their skills to become effective leaders of the future. Over the past 10 years, the Leadership College has successfully graduated 145 scholars, with five having served on NCMS and Foundation boards, 64 on NCMS committees or task forces, and 65 as officers in their county or specialty medical societies.
As our program continues to grow, the NCMS strives to provide more educational resources to its scholars in the hopes that they will be prepared for the future of the medical profession. Our most recent efforts include the establishment of the Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership, funded by the Elizabeth P. Kanof, MD Leadership Development Endowment. The Institute will significantly enhance the Leadership College by providing two additional education tracks with expanded course work in clinical quality and administrative medicine.
“Our goal is to help physicians become leaders to ensure that our health care system provides better quality care for individual patients and populations, is more cost effective, and provides greater transparency,” said Carolyn Ferree, MD, former NCMS president. “The Institute for Physician Leadership will be a key incubator for effectuating these changes.”
