NCMS President Douglas D. Sheets, MD, has called for an Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) Summit to be held Saturday, August 7, 2010, 10:30am – 2:30pm, at the NCMS headquarters in Raleigh. The Summit aims to educate physicians about ACOs and the need to take a leadership role in the development of new health care delivery models such as ACOs in North Carolina. Dr. Sheets has invited specialty and county societies to each send up to two representatives to address the changes resulting from the passage of comprehensive health system reform legislation earlier this year.
The NCMS is envisioning a comprehensive approach that will focus on organizational development (ACOs or similar health care delivery models), health information technology and exchange (HIT), and quality. The Health System Reform Resource Center on the NCMS website will have a section dedicated to ACOs. Physicians are encouraged to learn more about these emerging delivery models and offer input on resources needed to prepare them for the medical practice of the future.

Event is by special invitation only; the NCMS has asked that each county medical society and specialty society in the state send up to 2 representatives. If you are interested in attending the ACO Summit, contact your local medical society or your specialty society to see if you can be the representative for your group.
The meeting will feature live blogging and will be videotaped for future reference for those unable to attend.
