NCMS FAQ of the Week: Physician Supervision

Due to a high volume of questions coming in through the Member Resource Center, the NCMS features a Frequently-Asked-Question (FAQ) for its members each week to share information about current medical and health care issues that their colleagues are having.

Q: Is there a limit to how many Nurse Practitioners (NPs) or Physician Assistants (PAs) that a physician can supervise?

A: No. The North Carolina Medical Board does not limit how many licensed health care practitioners that a physician can oversee. However, the Board has identified several factors that the supervising physician must understand in order to make sure that supervision is adequate. Click here to view the North Carolina Medical Board’s position statement on this issue. Supervising physicians must provide adequate supervision regardless of the number of practitioners being supervised.
