Ophelia Garmon-Brown, MD, Vice President of Community Partnerships for Novant Health Inc., and a member of the NCMS Foundation’s Board of Trustees, has been named Charlotte’s Woman of the Year for 2010. This award recognizes community service and civic leadership in and around the Charlotte area. Dr. Garmon-Brown is a physician and ordained minister who serves the Charlotte community in a variety of ways. She is the medical director of the Charlotte Community Health Free Clinic and the Salvation Army’s Women’s and Children’s Shelter.

Dr. Garmon-Brown graduated from medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 and completed her internship and residency at Carolinas Medical Center, where she was the first African-American woman to do so. In 2009, she was the first African-American woman to be elected president of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society. Dr. Garmon-Brown joined the NCMS Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2010.
