NCMS Headquarters Renovation and Capital Campaign Underway

The NCMS Board of Directors is overseeing extensive renovations of the NCMS Headquarters Building, with the goal of transforming the Society’s public home to the North Carolina Center for Leadership in Medicine. The building will house the Society’s current operations and the Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership.

The NCMS Headquarters was built in 1970 and funded by member dues assessments. The building is located in the heart of Raleigh, behind the NC Executive Mansion and just a few blocks from the NC General Assembly, giving the medical profession prominence among the state’s legislative and regulatory decision-makers.  In 2010, the NCMS Board of Directors appointed a Real Estate Committee to evaluate options for the future of the building, which required extensive renovations including replacement of the elevator and major heating, air and electrical systems. One option was to sell the headquarters building and to seek a long-term lease in Raleigh office space. The Board of Directors felt strongly that the headquarters building continues to be a symbol of the Society’s strength and tenure as the first professional organization in North Carolina. The decision was made to renovate the building to serve NCMS members for many years into the future.

The Board approved a three-year, phased approach to renovations, allowing flexibility in making decisions about renovations and their financial impact on the organization. In 2012, the lower level of the three-story building was renovated and the cooling tower and electrical systems were replaced. The NCMS Foundation and the Specialty Societies and Meetings Department moved to their permanent home on the lower level of the building. After several “clean-out days” and recycling events, the rest of the staff packed up 40 years of records, furniture and equipment and relocated to the second level while renovations commenced on the first floor.

First floor renovations will be completed by year’s end and the NCMS staff will relocate to their permanent office space. For 2014, second floor renovations will be made to accommodate additional office space for the NCMS and tenants.

The decision to renovate the building represents an opportunity to showcase the outstanding medical care and innovations taking place in North Carolina.  The NCMS Center for Leadership in Medicine will not just be office space, but rather a home for our physician-driven mission focused on:

Care Innovations: Providing members with resources, education and hands-on consulting in accountable care organization (ACO) development, patient-centered medical homes, meaningful use and other tools for implementing value-driven models of care.

Physician Leadership: Preparing physicians for our changing health care environment with skill improvement in leadership principals and practice, clinical quality and education via The Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership.

Effective Advocacy: Playing a leading role in the development of sound health and fiscal policy affecting the daily practice of medicine in NC.

Overall, the NCMS is best positioned to provide leadership in building relationships across all health care sectors, with the NCMS Center for Leadership in Medicine at its core. A Capital Campaign in underway to support these efforts and to give our members and stakeholders an opportunity to support and recognize the NCMS mission and the work of health care pioneers statewide.
