Donald R. Wall, former NCMS Deputy Executive Vice President, retires this month after 30 years of dedicated service to the NCMS. On Tuesday, July 17, he was honored at a luncheon attended by his family, NCMS staff and leadership, colleagues, nine NCMS Past Presidents, and current President Robert Monteiro, MD.

Don began his NCMS career in October 1982 as Director of the Business Affairs Department, following his tenure as Chief Financial Officer at the North Carolina Symphony, Senior Auditor and Tax Accountant at Lynch, McMillan and Robertson CPAs, and his service in the United States Army. In January of 1994, he was promoted to NCMS Deputy Executive Vice President, a post he held until July of 2012 when he cut back on his NCMS duties.

Speakers at the luncheon lauded Don’s dedication to the NCMS and the physicians and patients of North Carolina. Several Past Presidents who served as NCMS Secretary-Treasurer praised his performance and attention to detail in managing the Society’s growing budget, expansion efforts and investments. His leadership roles in the development of the NCMS Foundation, the North Carolina Physicians Health Program (NCPHP) and the NCMS Employee Benefit Plan also were recognized. Speakers praised not only his dedication to his job, but also his kind and compassionate heart.

“Don has approached his responsibilities in managing the operations and finances of the NCMS with ultimate regard for protecting the Society’s resources,” said John Mangum, MD.

In his remarks, Don thanked the Society’s leadership and Executive Vice President and CEO Robert W. Seligson for the opportunity to serve. “There has been no greater honor than serving the medical profession,” said Don. “I will miss the leadership and staff and always cherish my years at the North Carolina Medical Society.”

Don will be missed by the NCMS Staff and leadership, though he is expected to be a frequent visitor and mentor. As he embraces retirement, Don plans to spend cherished time with his wife Sandy, sons Scott and Brian, and his five grandchildren. Bulletin readers are encouraged to reply to this article with their well wishes, which will be forwarded to Don to enjoy.
