Craig A. Buchman, MD, North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) member and the current president of the NC Society of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and his research team at UNC recently made medical history when they gave a young deaf boy the ability to hear for the first time. Grayson Clamp, Dr. Buchman’s 3-year-old patient, was born without an auditory nerve. However, due to Dr. Buchman’s successful placement of a cochlear implant, Grayson became not only the first child in the United States to undergo such a surgery, he also heard sound for the first time in his life.

Watch Grayson’s reaction to hearing his father’s voice for the first time. This video clip has received national media attention, appearing on network television news and going viral on the Internet.
