NCMS Members/Spouses Elected

On Election Day, several NCMS members or their spouses were elected to serve our state in the General Assembly. With their knowledge of medicine and healthcare systems, these legislators will likely play an important role in the debate surrounding health care issues.

Representative Mark Hollo (R-Alexander) was reelected in NC House District 73. Representative Hollo will be serving his third term in the General Assembly. He earned 71.4 percent of the vote. This past session, he was the Chairman of the House Health and Human Services Committee. Representative Hollo has been a practicing physician assistant for over 27 years.

Representative-elect James Fulghum (R-Wake) was successful in his first race to represent NC House District 49. In a highly competitive race, Dr. Fulghum, won by earning an impressive 54.2 percent of the vote. During his career Dr. Fulghum has been a partner at Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic, Triangle Back and Spine Care Center, and Carolina Rehabilitation and Surgical Associates.

Representative-elect Susan Martin (R-Wilson) was successful in her first bid for a seat in the North Carolina House. She won her election in NC House District 8, which is a swing district, by earning 57.3 percent of the vote. Representative-elect Martin is the wife of orthopaedic surgeon Lewis Martin, MD, who practices at Wilson Ortho.

Representative-elect Deb McManus (D-Chatham) won her election in NC House District 54. She received 56.1 percent of the vote in a very competitive election. Her husband, Keith McManus, MD, is a family practitioner with Carolina Family Practice, where Representative-elect McManus has been the bookkeeper and office manager.

Senator Wesley Meredith (R-Cumberland) won reelection in Senate District 19. He scored an impressive victory by winning 53.9 percent of the vote in a challenging district. Senator Meredith will be serving his second term. Last year, he was the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. Senator Meredith’s wife, Angela, is a physician assistant.

Earlier this year, Senator-elect Jeff Tarte (R-Mecklenburg) notched an exciting win in Senate District 41. Senator-elect Tarte was unopposed in the general election after winning both a hard-fought primary and runoff election. For years, Senator-elect Tarte has served as the Mayor of Cornelius. He has knowledge of the healthcare system from many different standpoints. In addition to his work consulting with industry leaders, he has served as the interim CIO at the academic medical center at the New England Medical Center –Tufts University. His wife, Nancy Tarte, MD, is a pediatrician with the Davidson Clinic.
