The NCMS encourages physicians to ask nurses they employ if their license is current and valid.  State law [Nursing Practice Act, State of North Carolina §90-171.43A] requires that employers verify that a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) has a current, valid license to practice nursing in North Carolina.

Effective July 1, 2011, the NCBON will no longer issue licenses to nurses (RNs and LPNs) who cannot attest to meeting the Continuing Competence Requirements (CCRs) at the time of license renewal/reinstatement, or to those who do not submit evidence of meeting the requirements when audited. Licensees who fail to submit complete and accurate CCR documentation to the Board by the end of their renewal month will automatically be placed on inactive status at midnight on the final day of the month. Immediately upon license inactivation, the nurse is no longer licensed and may not practice under any circumstances.

When a nurse has submitted the required CCR documentation to the Board, it will be reviewed and, if acceptable, the nursing license will be issued. This process may require up to five business days from time of receipt by the NCBON.
