Remembering Charles L. Nance, Jr., MD

Charles Lee Nance, Jr., MD, died July 28, 2010, in Asheville following a head injury. He was born August 30, 1934 in Charlotte. A memorial service celebrating his life was held July 31 in Wilmington, NC, where he practiced orthopaedic surgery from 1967 until he retired in 2001.

Dr. Nance was Past President of the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society and the NC Orthopaedic Association. He served in numerous local, regional and state leadership positions and was an active member of the North Carolina Medical Society. He served as the volunteer team physician for the New Hanover High School football team for 23 years, receiving the NC High School Athletic Association’s Unsung Hero Award in 1994. He also received the Ederhause Senior Professional Award in 2003 and the NC Orthopaedic Association Distinguished Orthopaedists Award in 2002. He was contributing author of Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care, 1967.  He received his MD from Duke University School of Medicine, interned at the Medical College of Virginia, and completed A General Surgical Residency and a Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at NC Memorial Hospital. He also served as a Medical Officer in the US Army Medical Corps.

Dr. Nance is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Linda Patton Nance, a son and a daughter, and four granddaughters, and by his sister, Ruth Nance Montfort of Charlotte.
