WHEREAS, the American Medical Association has a policy statement in support of same-sex households and civil marriage and in opposition to any discrimination based on sexual orientation; and
WHEREAS, one of the purposes of the North Carolina Medical Society is “to inform the public regarding medical care and public health, so that the profession can become … more useful in the prevention and cure of disease and in prolonging and adding comfort to life;” and
WHEREAS, studies have shown that exclusion from civil unions contributes to health care disparities and adverse health outcomes in Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender persons, including mood disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, alcohol use disorder, and psychiatric comorbidity; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Medical Society Constitution states that the House of Delegates shall “use its influence to secure and enforce all proper medical and public health legislation;” therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the North Carolina Medical Society opposes the denial of civil marriage based on sexual orientation as it is discriminatory imposes harmful stigma on gay and lesbian individuals and couples and their families, and contributes to health care disparities within same-sex households; and be it further (policy)
RESOLVED, That the North Carolina Medical Society supports efforts to reduce health care disparities among members of same-sex households including minor children; and be it further (policy)
RESOLVED, That the North Carolina Medical Society supports measures providing same-sex households with the same rights and privileges to health care, health insurance, and survivor benefits, as afforded opposite-sex households. (policy)
Fiscal Note: No additional funding above current resources estimated. Current resources will be allocated based on the priorities of the Society and the NCMS budget.

We support the intent of this resolution and believe it parallels both AMA and AAFP policy. However, there are some language revisions that may be needed and recommend referral to the Board for clarification and quick action.
