Resolution 22: Greetings and Appreciation

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants represents over 2,500 members and over 4,000 licensed physician assistants (PAs) in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the physician assistant profession was created at Duke University Medical Center in 1965 by Dr. Eugene Stead, with the first PA class graduating in 1967; and

WHEREAS, the physician assistant profession was propagated throughout the nation through efforts spearheaded by Dr. Harvey Estes and other physician leaders in the North Carolina Medical Society; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants embraces the concept that PAs extend the care that physicians provide and increase access to care by practicing in physician-led teams; and

WHEREAS, physician assistants were first invited to join the North Carolina Medical Society Physician Assistant Section in 1992 and have been valued North Carolina Medical Society members for over twenty years; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Medical Society and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants have successfully offered a reduced-cost joint membership to all licensed physician assistants in North Carolina for over three years; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Medical Society and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants have often partnered and pooled resources to pursue common legislative, regulatory, and philanthropic goals; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants is proud to be one of the many donors contributing to the Elizabeth P. Kanof, MD Leadership College Endowment; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the North Carolina Medical Society accepts greetings and appreciation from the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants; and be it further  (action)

RESOLVED, That the North Carolina Medical Society and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants continue to cooperate and support one another, particularly in those areas of common regulatory and legislative interest; and be it further  (action)

RESOLVED, That the North Carolina Medical Society and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants continue to advocate on behalf of all physician-PA teams in North Carolina and on behalf of the patients cared for by these teams.  (action)

Fiscal Note:  No additional funding above current resources estimated.  Current resources will be allocated based on the priorities of the Society and the NCMS budget.
