Tax Scam Affecting Some Health Care Professionals Still Unsolved

The tax scam, which has affected many health care professionals throughout the country, is still under investigation by the Internal Revenue Service. About 100 North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) members reported to us earlier this year that false tax returns had been filed using their social security numbers.

In light of one member’s concerns, we would like to clarify that the NCMS had nothing to do with this data breach. We requested that members affected by the scam let us know so we could take this information directly to the NC Attorney General and other officials to aid in their investigation and to help them bring the scammers to justice. Also, please note that we do not store member social security numbers in our database.

While the number of doctors reporting this scam to us has decreased dramatically since tax filing time in April, we have checked back with authorities periodically to see if any progress has been made in uncovering who is behind this scam, which has been reported in most states and is not unique to doctors. The investigators continue to tell us they are working on it, but have not cracked the case yet.

Stay tuned to the NCMS Bulletin and website for updates on this issue.
