2011 NCMS Leadership College Scholars Convene for Leadership Training in Chapel Hill

The 2011 class of the NCMS Leadership College met in Chapel Hill May 13-15, 2011 for a leadership training retreat. The annual May session offers comprehensive training for over two and a half days, featuring  faculty from around the state discussing leadership skills and hot topics in medicine.

This year’s retreat/training took place at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill, beginning Friday with a discussion by NCMS CEO Robert Seligson on “Leading by Example,” followed by “Financial Concepts for the Clinical Leader” by Devdutta Sangvai, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.F.P.; Angela W. Banask, CPA. Marianne Jackson, MD presented on Lean health care; and Sharon Delaney McCloud & Kim Dean Holderness from Greenroom Communications LLC, trained scholars on crafting messages and speaking to the media.

On Saturday morning, the NCMS Board of Directors met jointly with the Leadership College class. Paul R. G. Cunningham, MD, FACS, Dean and the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University spoke on “Academia’s response to the changes in the Health Care Environment.” Steven Keene and Amy Whited from the NCMS Government Affairs department discussed current healthcare bills, legislative processes and the work of the NCMS in political advocacy. Mott Blair, MD presented on his experience running a political campaign. The Saturday program continued with a series of talks on hot-button topics in healthcare with John Torontow, M.D., M.P.H. discussing REC, Meaningful Use and Health Information Technology, followed by Dr. Lawrence Cutchin’s talk on Accountable Care Organizations, and a presentation by Warren Newton, M.D. and Jeff Engel, MD on “Quality, Population Health, Patient Centered Medical Home and Interdisciplinary Teams.”

The weekend concluded with an interactive discussion on leadership skills by Leadership College alumni, Douglas Holmes, MD, Lawrence Wu, MD and O’Neill D’Cruz, MD, and in-depth group discussions were facilitated by Michelle Jones, MD, Eugenie Komives, MD and Brian Caveney, MD, JD, MPH.

The 2011 Leadership College class will meet again on June 15th in Raleigh for Legislative Advocacy Day, when they will meet with their state representatives to discuss health care issues and current bills.
