Medical Mutual’s Risk Assessment Process Earns Recognition from A.M. Best

A.M. Best has recognized Medical Mutual for its state-of the-art Risk Assessment Process for Improving Patient Safety Outcomes and featured the project in the Innovators Showcase, published in the January 2012 issue of Best’s Review.

Innovators Showcase, in conjunction with its panel of insurance industry experts, recognized insurance organizations that developed “forward-thinking projects that have a fundamental impact on critical processes, as well as outcomes for a company and its clients.” Regarding the merits of Medical Mutual’s Innovators Showcase submission, an insurance industry expert wrote, “Risk identification and analysis are key first steps in determining a company’s risk exposures.  Medical Mutual Insurance Company of North Carolina has created a process for health care clients that achieves both.  It is a winner.”

The Medical Mutual Risk Management and Information Technology Departments drove the development of the risk assessment process. Dale Jenkins, Medical Mutual’s CEO, commended the Risk Management and IT staff for their collaboration in demonstrating the “measurable and significant positive impact of the risk assessment process for improving patient safety outcomes.”

NCMS physician leaders formed Medical Mutual in 1975 in response to the escalating medical liability crisis. It is the only professional liability company owned and operated by North Carolina physicians.
