A study published in this month’s issue of Health Affairs states that hospitals use of more cutting-edge technology while offering select specialty services in order to attract physicians and patients has led to an increase of hospitals geographic service expansion. The study was conducted in 12 United States communities in 2010 and found that hospitals systems, most in undesirable areas, have expanded to compete for better-insured patients by building or buying facilities and physician practices near more affluent communities. The survey discusses the implications surrounding cost and access to health care as well as questions if the outcome of geographic expansion will cause for better care, more cost, or both.
