This Sunday, March 30th, is National Doctors’ Day. The staff at the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) would like to thank and honor physicians across North Carolina for their continued dedication to delivering the highest quality care.
On October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed a resolution officially designating March 30th as “National Doctors’ Day.” Although only officially becoming a law in 1990, National Doctors’ Day dates back to the 1930s.
The holiday was first conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, as a means of honoring physicians. March 30, 1933 marked the first observance of National Doctors’ Day. The day was commemorated by delivering greeting cards and placing a flower on the graves of deceased physicians. Today, red carnations have become the symbolic flower of the holiday.
