Clinicians and practice managers in smaller practices can get help in preparing for ICD-10 on June 26 at the NCMS Center for Leadership in Medicine in Raleigh. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is holding classes throughout the southeast to help clinicians and practice managers, especially those in smaller offices, prepare for ICD-10 implementation. They have enlisted Noblis Health Innovation to offer training focused on how smaller practices should prepare for ICD-10. There are separate classes for Practice Management Staff (managers, billers, coders) and Clinicians (physicians, ARNP, NP, PA, RN). The Practice Management class on June 26 is from 1-2 PM at the NCMS headquarters. The Clinician class is from 5-6 PM at the NCMS. The only other class scheduled at this time is in Jacksonville, FL, but CMS is looking for venues for this summer that accommodate 75-300 people in Charlotte as well as in Georgia and Kentucky. The classes will have the CMS logo and the address of the venue.
CMS also is offering ICD-10 documentation and coding concept webcasts on cardiology and pediatrics. To view the webcast please visit cms.gov/ICD10 for a link to “Road to 10,” then click on the “Webcast” tab located in the left-hand navigation bar. An AHIMA-certified coder presents on the webcast, which focuses on unique ICD-10 clinical documentation needs and hot topics for cardiology and pediatrics.
CMS also will offer other webinars in the “Road to 10” series that will follow the same outline and objectives for other specialties, including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and family practice and internal medicine. The North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) is partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina’s (BCBSNC) Strategic Provider Relationships Team to offer and promote informational forums about the coming transition to ICD-10. Lee Ford, an ICD-10 coding expert, will be the featured speaker. Franklin Walker, Director of Programs & Practice Management for the NCMS Foundation, also will discuss practice and trading partner readiness with attendees.

The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) throughout the state in conjunction with NCHIMA also will be offering classes leading up to the implementation of ICD-10. The ICD-10-CM training sessions will have a small part on the foundation for understanding the structure of an ICD-10-CM. The rest of the course will focus on how to code using ICD-10-CM, covering the ICD-10-CM coding guidelines. Emphasis will also be directed to codes that require expanded clinical documentation to code to the highest level of specificity.
