Elizabeth Kanof, MD, longtime North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) member, former NCMS and NCMS Foundation president and currently a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees, received a Resolution of Appreciation from the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA) at their Annual Meeting on Monday, Aug. 18.

The surprise honor recognized Kanof for her many years of “outstanding support” for the physician assistant profession and for her “vision for the inclusion of physician assistants in the NCMS and the Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership. The development and recruitment of Physician Assistant leaders has helped to bring about a renewed emphasis on the concept of team-based care for the patients of North Carolina,” the Resolution of Appreciation reads.

This is the first time such an award has been given by the NCAPA and will be reserved only for those most deserving, according to Marian Cranford, PA-C, who is heavily involved with the NCAPA and NCMS as well as secretary-treasurer of the Durham Orange County Medical Society. Cranford also spearheaded the design of the actual award to honor Dr. Kanof. It is a hand-blown glass vase by prominent California glass artist Paul Harrie. Cranford said she wanted an award that would recognize Dr. Kanof’s patronage of the arts and her love of gardening. To further honor Dr. Kanof’s affiliation with the arts community, a $500 donation was made to the NC Museum of Art as part of the recognition.

This year’s NCAPA conference drew 1,032 physican assistants and nurse practitioners largely from North Carolina,  but representing 30 states.
