Midwifery Joint Committee Votes Down Licensure of Certified Professional Midwives

The North Carolina Midwifery Joint Committee (MJC) met on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.  At the conclusion of last year’s legislative session, the General Assembly permitted the committee to study and make recommendations regarding the potential licensure of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in the state.  Following numerous meetings and presentations from various stakeholder groups, including brief testimony that the NCMS was allowed to offer, the Midwifery Joint Committee voted down the recommendation to allow and set standards for the licensure of CPMs in North Carolina.  The next meeting of the Midwifery Joint Committee is scheduled for November 17, 2010 in Raleigh.
