Pitt County Community College (PCCC) has been named one of the five institutions across the country to lead a regional consortium of community colleges to train thousands of new health information technology professionals. $10.9 million in federal funds from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been awarded for the first year of the program, which covers a 13-state region that stretches from North Carolina to New Mexico and includes almost one-third of the nation’s population. Also taking part in the consortia of 20 community colleges are Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in Charlotte and Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) in Hickory.

Training is expected to begin September 30, 2010, with each community college to provide a non-degree, online training program designed to be completed in six months or less. Additional funding is available for a second year after successful completion of a mid-project evaluation.
