The North Carolina Division of Public Health is providing health care providers with information about an important new HIV prevention strategy called Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).  Read more about their efforts.

In May 2014, the CDC and U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) released clinical guidelines for the use of PrEP among patients at substantial risk for HIV infection.

To learn more about PrEP and how to implement it in your practice, the North Carolina AIDS Training and Education Center (NCATEC) has put together online resources for North Carolina providers. NCATEC has condensed the CDC/USPHS guidelines into step-by-step guidance for managing PrEP, but you can also download the full PrEP guidelines and the clinical providers’ supplement directly from the CDC at http://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/23109 and  http://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/23108, respectively.

Additionally, the manufacturer of Truvada, the FDA approved drug for PrEP, has developed a medication assistance program to help both insured and uninsured patients get access to PrEP. More information about the Truvada medication assistance program is available at http://start.truvada.com.
