NCMS FAQ of the Week: Charging for Medical Records

Due to a high volume of questions coming in through the Member Resource Center, the NCMS will provide a Frequently-Asked-Question (FAQ) for its members each week to make them more aware of current medical and health care issues discussed by their colleagues.

Q: As a physician, how much can I charge to cover the cost of copying patient medical records?

A: According to the North Carolina General Statute 90-411. Record copy fee, you can charge a reasonable fee to cover the cost of searching, handling, copying and mailing medical records to your patients. You may impose a minimum fee of up to $10 and a maximum fee of the following:

  • 75 cents per page for the first 25 pages
  • 50 cents per page for pages 26-100
  • 25 cents for each page in excess of 100 pages
