Due to a high volume of questions coming in through the Member Resource Center, the NCMS features a Frequently-Asked-Question (FAQ) for its members each week to share information about current medical and health care issues that their colleagues are having.

Q: Can I dispose of paper medical charts if the entire record is transferred to an electronic health record?

A: If the whole medical record is scanned into an electronic health record (EHR) system, then the paper medical records can be discarded. However, there is a fine line to be aware of and practices should contact their malpractice insurance carriers for additional input.
