NCMS FAQ of the Week: EMTALA Guidelines for On-Call Physicians

Due to a high volume of questions coming in through the Member Resource Center, the NCMS features a Frequently-Asked-Question (FAQ) for its members each week to share information about current medical and health care issues that their colleagues are having.

Q: Where can I find resources for on-call physicians pertaining to EMTALA obligations?

A: The American Medical Association (AMA) offers a quick reference guide to assist on-call physicians understand their responsibilities in an emergency setting according to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).  The guide provides an overview and highlights penalties of violating EMTALA.
