Thomas G. Irons, MD, Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Professor of Pediatrics at East Carolina University, received the Award for Excellence in Public Service from the UNC Board of Governors on Monday. Established in 2007, the award seeks to encourage, identify, recognize and reward distinguished public service and outreach by faculty across the 17-campus University system. The award includes a $7,500 cash prize.

David Rockwell, MD, of Hampstead, received the 2011 Honored Surgeon Award from the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association at its annual meeting on October 8, 2011. The award recognizes a North Carolina orthopaedic surgeon who has been notably influential in the promotion of the highest standards of orthopaedic care and has distinguished himself among his peers for dedication to quality patient care and to the medical profession.
