NCMS Signatory to Letter Addressing Health Care Workforce Challenges

The NCMS has joined with other state medical societies, specialty organizations and the AMA in addressing concerns stemming from a recent webinar hosted by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). In the webinar, panelists suggested that the nation’s serious health care workforce challenges could be solved by eliminating important patient safety provisions in state law regarding non-physician scope of practice. According to the letter, “the Webinar promoted the advocacy agenda of certain nursing and other organizations who argue against the value of all health care professionals working together in a coordinated, team-based fashion.”

Addressed to Richard T. Moore, National Conference of State Legislatures, the letter emphasized the long-held belief that a health care professional’s scope of practice should be determined by education and training. The NCMS and other signatories encouraged the NCSL to include physicians in future discussions so that legislators can hear all sides of the issues involved.
