New Substance Abuse Resources Focus on Teens

New resources were released this month by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to help clinicians care for teens struggling with or at risk of developing substance use disorders (SUDs).

“Because critical brain circuits are still developing during the teen years, this age group is particularly susceptible to drug abuse and addiction,” emphasizes NIDA Director Dr. Nora D. Volkow.

Clinicians are in a prime position to help care for teens with SUDs, and NIDA has developed these resources with them in mind. Dr. Volkow adds, “These new resources are based on recent research that has greatly advanced our understanding of the unique treatment needs of the adolescent.”
