Donald Ray Wall received the John Huske Anderson Award at the NCMS Annual Meeting in Raleigh. The award, named after John Huske Anderson, a senior partner with Smith Anderson law firm, recognizes those whose contributions have had a positive impact on the medical profession and public health as did Mr. Anderson.

Wall devoted 30 years of his professional life to the North Carolina Medical Society beginning in 1982 as Director of the Society’s Business Affairs Department. In 1994, he was promoted to NCMS Deputy Executive Vice President responsible for financial management, budgeting, data processing, personnel management, maintaining fiscal policies and procedures, developing accounting systems for nonprofit organizations, management and tax planning. He held this post until July 2012.

Wall holds associate degrees in accounting from Hardbarger Junior College of Business and Wake Tech Community College in non-profit management. His studies focused on accounting, Business Administration, and Commercial and Business law.

After serving in the U.S. Army in Europe as controller for appropriated funds and command tax advisor, he returned to North Carolina where his professional journey began in the offices of CPA firm Lynch, McMillan and Robertson. He moved on to become the Chief Financial Officer at the North Carolina Symphony before the North Carolina Medical Society discovered him and lured him away from the Symphony.

During his career with the NCMS, Wall also rose to become President of the American Association for Medical Society Executives, the national organization representing over 3,000 members nationwide, after serving that group in many capacities for over 30 years. He has been an active board member of the North Carolina Physicians Health Program serving as chairman of the Finance Committee since 1995.

Those who worked with Wall acknowledged his “ultimate regard for protecting the Society’s resources” and his kind and compassionate heart.

NCMS’s CEO, Robert W. Seligson stated that “Don made numerous contributions to the growth and success of the NCMS during his 30 years of service. His positive contributions to the Society will never be forgotten.”
