Consumers do better when there is choice and competition. But in 44 states 75 percent of the ins mkt is controlled by a few companies. This must be addressed in reform.

I believe the quote was 75% covered by 5 (or fewer?) companies. There are many industries (auto, cable/satellite TV, cell phones) with similar demographics. I do not believe this is a primary determinant of cost. High tech care options, an aging and sedentary population, and relative ignorance and insensitivity to true costs of care do more to drive up cost. Defensive medicine is another factor.
