New Resources Available to Assist Medical Staffs
A new online tool, “The Model Medical Staff Bylaws,” is now available for NCMS members to use to face the challenges of compliance with the many laws, regulartions, and standards governing medical staff bylaws. In addition to this resource, the NCMS and the Buncombe County Medical Society present “Medical Staff Boot Camp: Empowering the Hospital’s Medical Staff,” November 19, 2009.

BCBS Security Breach
Physicians contracting with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans, who use their Social Security number as their Tax ID number, should be aware that their personal information was likely on a laptop computer that was stolen from a BCBS Association employee’s car. Each affected physician should have received a letter from BCBS addressing the breach.

NCMS and Others Comment on BCBSNC Contract Addendum
NCMS, NCMGM, NCAFP and NCSA have sent a letter to Commissioner Wayne Goodwin (PDF) asking for his review of a recently mailed Addendum to the BCBSNC agreement. The letter asserts that the addendum is non-compliant with Senate Bill 877, otherwise known as the Fair Contracting legislation.

U.S. Senate Fails to Consider S. 1776
The US Senate blocked a vote to consider Senate Bill 1776 on Wednesday. Known as the Medicare Physicians Fairness Act of 2009, the legislation would have provided a permanent fix to the flawed SGR formula. Currently Medicare physician payments will be cut by 21.5% beginning January 2010 unless Congress takes action.

DHHS Seeks to Limit H1N1 Spread at State Facilities as Flu Activity Remains Widespread
State-operated hospitals, residential schools, developmental disability centers, neuro-medical treatment centers and alcohol and drug treatment centers have implemented steps to limit the spread of the H1N1 influenza virus. Effective today, all state facilities will actively screen all staff and visitors to identify people exhibiting signs of respiratory infections.
